Editorial Standards — Nakhla Press

Nakhla Press is a regional gazette serving readers across the United Arab Emirates. Our journalism aims to be rigorous, fair and transparent. These editorial standards explain how we gather, verify and present news, how we handle errors, and how we distinguish reporting from opinion.

Accuracy and verification

We verify information before publication. Reporters use primary documents, official records, direct observation, interviews and corroboration from multiple independent sources when possible. For breaking stories we publish only verified facts and clearly label items that are developing. We correct factual mistakes promptly and clearly (see Correction Policy).

Before publication we seek confirmation of contested or potentially harmful claims from the people or institutions involved. We strive for precise language — attributing claims, specifying uncertainty and avoiding speculation.

Sourcing and attribution

We name sources whenever feasible. Attributions should make clear how information was obtained: on the record, off the record, on background, or from public documents. We link to source materials — documents, data sets, audio or video — when available.

We do not pay sources for information. Gifts, payments or other inducements from subjects or sources that could influence coverage must be disclosed to and approved by editors; in most cases they are prohibited.

Anonymous sources

Anonymous sources are used rarely and only when the information is in the public interest and cannot be obtained by other means. Use of anonymous sources requires senior editor approval and independent corroboration. When we grant anonymity we explain on the record why the source cannot be named and describe the steps taken to verify the information. We are especially cautious about anonymous sources in criminal cases, electoral matters and coverage that could seriously harm reputations.

Conflicts of interest

Reporters and editors must avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest. Staff must disclose relationships, financial interests, gifts, outside employment, political activity or other commitments that could influence coverage. Where a conflict exists or may reasonably be perceived, we will reassign reporting duties or make a clear disclosure to readers.

Nakhla Press discloses significant financial relationships, sponsored content or partnerships that relate to editorial coverage. Advertising, sponsored content and promotions are clearly labeled and are produced under a firewall that protects editorial independence.

Separation of news and opinion

News reporting and opinion content serve different purposes and follow different conventions. News aims to inform through verified facts and balanced reporting. Opinion expresses analysis, interpretation or advocacy and is clearly labeled as such. Opinion pieces, editorials and columns are separated from news pages and are identified by byline and masthead designation; they may contain argument and viewpoint but should be grounded in accurate facts.

Editors do not allow advertiser influence over news coverage, and opinion writers disclose material connections that could affect credibility.

Treatment of people and fairness

We treat people with respect and fairness. Before publishing material that could harm an individual’s reputation, livelihood or safety, reporters seek comment from the affected person or their representative when practical. We give government and corporate sources an opportunity to respond to substantive allegations.

We take particular care with vulnerable people and minors and with issues that could endanger privacy or safety.

Corrections and complaints

We strive to correct errors quickly and transparently. Significant factual errors will be corrected in the text of the story with a clear note describing the change and the date of correction. Minor errors such as typographical mistakes will be fixed promptly; where appropriate we will note the correction.

If you believe a story falls short of these standards or contains an error, please contact us. Editorial complaints and requests for corrections may be sent to [email protected] or submitted via our /contact/ form. We review complaints and corrections thoroughly and respond as appropriate.

Editorial independence and accountability

Nakhla Press journalists follow these standards in service of the public interest. Our editors oversee adherence to this policy and are available to explain editorial decisions. If you have a question about our practices or an unresolved concern after contacting the newsroom, please use the contact methods above.
