Abu Dhabi Sets December Opening for Guggenheim; Government Partnership Reaches Milestone

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism confirmed on July 28, 2026 that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open to the public on 11 December 2026, marking the culmination of a formal government partnership with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation that has been active since 2009.

The announcement reflects a deliberate policy decision by Abu Dhabi’s governing institutions to position the emirate as a leading global center for arts and culture. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism, framed the project as foundational to the emirate’s conviction that culture serves as a bridge between peoples and a building block for forward-looking societies. His statement emphasized the museum’s role in creating opportunities for learning, creativity, and cultural exchange across generations.

The institution will operate as a museum of modern and contemporary art, housing works from the 1960s to the present. It will occupy 11,600 square metres of interior gallery space across 30 galleries, with an additional 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas. The total built-up area reaches 80,000 square metres, placing it among the most significant museum developments globally in terms of scale.

The museum’s location on Saadiyat Island places it within a coordinated cultural district that includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. This concentration of institutions reflects a deliberate clustering strategy by Abu Dhabi’s cultural authorities, one designed to establish the district as one of the world’s most significant cultural precincts.

The building was designed by the late Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Frank Gehry. It features ten sculptural cones serving both aesthetic and functional purposes: nine are clad in stainless steel mesh, while one is clad in onyx and glass. The cones reach heights of up to 88 metres and provide natural ventilation and shade, enhancing energy efficiency. The design draws on forms inspired by the Gulf region.

Dr. Mariët Westermann, Director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, stated that the foundation is proud to partner with the Department of Culture and Tourism in shaping a museum of contemporary art with significant scope and aspiration. She described the collection as uniquely local and global, centered in the region but incorporating works from all continents.

The museum’s curatorial framework organizes art through thematic vectors including Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language, and Storytelling. This approach moves beyond chronological or geographic ordering to highlight artistic lineages, networks, and exchanges across cultures and generations. The collection spans painting, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image, and new media.

By contrast with many institutional launches, public programming is already active and ongoing across the United Arab Emirates ahead of the December opening. The Department of Culture and Tourism has indicated that additional information about the collection and commissioned works will be announced in the coming months. A community registration system is in place for those wishing to receive future announcements.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will become the fourth museum in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s international network, joining the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Whether the December opening date holds, and what the full scope of commissioned works will reveal about Abu Dhabi’s evolving cultural mandate, remains to be seen.
