Americana Restaurants signed an exclusive development agreement with Taco Bell UK and Europe Ltd on August 30, marking the American fast-food chain’s official return to the UAE after a 14-year absence. The agreement confirms that the brand will reestablish operations in the country and eventually expand across other GCC markets. One critical detail remains unconfirmed: the exact timeline for when UAE residents will be able to visit a Taco Bell location.

That gap between announcement and opening leaves residents time to explore the UAE’s transformed Mexican food landscape. When Taco Bell departed in 2012, options for tacos, burritos and quesadillas were far more limited. The market has since expanded considerably, offering everything from casual fast-casual concepts to upscale dining establishments.

Maiz Tacos represents the homegrown approach to the category. The Dubai-based brand evolved from a food truck into a casual dining operation, with locations in JLT and Dubai Hills, centering its menu on tacos alongside quesadillas, nachos and other Mexican-inspired offerings. For those seeking a more specialized taco experience, El Primo Taqueria draws inspiration from Mexico City street stalls and founder Jonathan’s background in Toluca. The restaurant offers both corn and flour tortillas filled with options ranging from pastor chicken with pineapple to slow-cooked Black Angus brisket, beef cheeks and Wagyu soujouk, with pastor and birria tacos served in sets of three.

The build-your-own model has become central to the UAE’s Mexican food scene. Taqado Mexican Kitchen has established itself as a familiar name for customisable burritos, bowls and tacos across multiple Dubai locations, including DIFC and Barsha Heights. Tortilla, a UK-born fast-casual chain, operates similarly with several UAE locations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Diners select their base, fillings and toppings to construct meals tailored to individual preferences, a format that appeals particularly to those seeking quick-service options rather than sit-down restaurant experiences.

Burro Blanco, a UAE-grown concept, extends beyond burritos to include build-your-own bowls, tacos and loaded quesadillas, with birria variations across multiple items. The menu allows customization with different proteins, toppings and salsas. Locations include Business Bay in Dubai and Masdar City and Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi.

Chalco’s Cantina in Dubai Marina offers a more comprehensive sit-down experience. The menu spans birria, grilled chicken, fish, shrimp, steak and vegetarian tacos, alongside burritos in varieties from chicken and beef to birria, steak, fish and shrimp. Additional offerings include fajitas, enchiladas, nachos and handmade churros.

At the upscale end, Loca operates as a longstanding Mexican restaurant on Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi. Rather than positioning itself as a direct Taco Bell substitute, the establishment caters to diners exploring Mexican cuisine beyond fast food. Its menu includes tacos and quesabirria alongside burritos with fillings such as carne asada, chicken with chile verde and slow-roasted lamb. Traditional dishes like tamales, gorditas and pollo en mole round out the offerings.

Whether Taco Bell’s eventual opening reshapes this now-crowded market, or simply adds another option to it, remains the more interesting question.
